In the Hop Store Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 76974 Driver Frederick McCarthy, serving with the Royal Field Artillery, who died 25/07/1917.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Frederick was born in 1893 at Waldridge Fell, Durham to parents Robert, a coal miner and Elizabeth McCarthy. Before he was born his parents, who were both born at Willington, Durham were living at Windlestone, Chilton, Durham.

In 1901 his family lived at Leslie Row, Hauxley, Amble in Northumberland when Frederick was aged 7. At this time Frederick had had two brothers, John William McCarthy, age 16, working as a banksman at the colliery and Harold McCarthy, age 3.

In 1911, he was living with his family at 69, Beaumont Street, Newcastle, working as a coal miner and unmarried. Frederick was living at 4, Third Street, Netherton when he enlisted at Newcastle and was working in the coal mines.

His two brothers John William and Harold were both killed in the Great War.

Frederick McCarthy is remembered in Bedlington on B15.07 and B15.26 page 110
