In St. Nicolas British Cemetery, Pas de Calais France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 21/353 Private John Earl, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 21st Battalion who died 29/4/1917.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

John Earl was born in 1883 at Bedlington and was the husband of Catherine Jane Earl (nee Metcalf). They married in 1905 and had two children, Mary and John Andrew. John Earl’s parents were Samuel Heatley Earl, a coal miner and Agnes Stellor Earl who lived at Baptist Yard, Bedlington in 1891 where the census shows John is aged 6 along with his siblings Isabella 16, Thomas 13, Peter 19, William 9 and Samuel 3. In 1901, the Earl family were living at Gladstone Terrace, Bedlington where John was 17 and employed as a cartman. In 1911 he lived at 72, Victoria Terrace, Bedlington Station, a street on the main road from Bedlington to Bedlington Station. At this time John worked for Bedlington Urban District Council as a labourer. After his death, his effects amounting to £8 13s 2d and £11 0s 0d went to his widow Catherine Jane in August 1917.

Morpeth Herald 18/05/1917 carries a brief obituary:

ROLL OF HONOUR

EARL.- In loving memory of Pte. John Earl, B Company, 2nd TynesideScottish, beloved son of Samuel Heatley and Agnes Earl, Gladstone Terrace, Bedlington, killed in action April 29th, 1917, aged 33 years.- Ever remembered by his father, mother, brothers, and sister, and all who knew him.

John's brother Samuel Heatley Earl also died in the Great War.
