BEDLINGTON

Miller, J., Pte., 1915
On the Loos Memorial is the name of 24348 Private John Miller serving with 12th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 25/09/1915.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

John William Miller's military record shows that he was born and enlisted in Bedlington. There is some confusion about his age, as the 1901 census would give his birth year as 1897, while the 1911 census would indicate his birth year as 1892, and the CWGC information would give a birth year of 1890. The CWGC information gives his parents' names as Robert and Mary Miller, while the censuses give his father as Levi Miller. All the other information appears to match so it looks as if Levi changed his name to avoid the suspicion that surrounded anyone with a foreign sounding name during the war. The family were living at Maple Street, New Hirst, Ashington in 1911, with John working as a putter down the pit with his father and younger brother, but they had previously lived at Old Colliery Row, Bedlington, so it is possible that they returned there after John died.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.09, B15.20 and B15.26 page 9
