BEDLINGTON

Stoker, T.J., Pte., 1917
On the Arras memorial is the name of 242691 Private Thomas Joseph Stoker serving with 2nd/5th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment who died 03/05/1917.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Thomas was born in Bedlington in 1877, the fourth child of Robert and Margaret Stoker. His father was a stone man in the pit, and in 1881 the family were living in Sleekburn Lane. I cannot find a census entry for the family in 1891, but Robert died in 1900 and shortly after that in 1901 the family were living in Vulcan Place, Bedlington, and Thomas had become a stone mason like his father. In 1911, when the family were still living in Vulcan Place, Thomas was a stone mason in the colliery, and was the sole wage earner for a house which contained his mother and two sisters. In the spring of 1914 he married Jane Scott, and they had a son named Robert in 1915. Thomas and his wife appear to have lived in the same house as his mother and sisters.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.09, B15.20 and B15.26 page 64
