J. Goodwill

On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 20/1050 Private Joseph Goodwill serving with 20th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Joseph was born in 1881 at Newton-on-the-Moor, Northumberland, the elder of two children to Thomas and Isabella Goodwill, but his father appears to have died when he was young. In the 1891 census, when the family were living at Newton-on-the-Moor it was Isabella who was named as Head of the family. In the 1901 census Joseph, working as a railway porter was lodging at Cross Row, Longhirst Colliery with an elderly pair of brothers, one of whom worked as a “caller of workmen”. In 1903 Joseph married Isabella Williamson, and at the time of the 1911 census they were living at 251, Yard Row, Netherton Colliery and Joseph had become a hewer down the pit. Joseph and Isabella had three children, Sarah Isabella (1905), George Williamson (1908) and Mary (1912).

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.07 and in B15.26 page 119
