John was born on August 29th 1872. He was working as a miner, living with his wife at 107, Portia Street, Ashington when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on November 20th 1914.

He joined the 1st Platoon, "D" Company of the Collingwood Battalion on March 4th 1915 and was posted as missing assumed killed in action in Gallipoli on June 4th 1915.
