ASHINGTON

Fawcett, A., A/Smn., 1917
In Puchevillers British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of TZ/1206 Able Seaman A. Fawcett, serving with Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died on the 24/01/1917.

Margaret Allison reports that he lived at 154 Pont Street, Ashington.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Arthur was born on the 3rd August 1893. He was working as a miner, living at 154, Pont Street, Ashington when he enlisted in to the Royal Naval Division on 9th November 1914. His next of kin was recorded as his father living at 75, West Street, Normanby, Yorks.

Arthur joined the Hawke Battalion on the 9th March 1915 and served until the 29th August 1915 when he went sick with Rheumatism. After rejoining the Hawke Battalion on the 12th October 1915 and suffering a light wound Arthur was hospitalised on the 6th October 1916 suffering from boils. He rejoined the battalion on 25th November 1916 and was seriously wounded on the 23rd January 1917. Arthur died from the effects of a gun shot wound in the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station on the 24th January 1917.
