Sgt. Welsh was the rear gunner of Avro Lancaster I ED493 WS-A of 9 squadron, which was lost on a mission to Hamburg. The Lancaster was shot down by a Luftwaffe night-fighter, flown by Ofw. Karl-Heinz Scherfling of IV./NJG.1, and crashed into the North Sea off Bergen Aan See, Holland, with the loss of all seven crew members.

Lancaster ED493 WS-A had departed Bardney at 2236 for Ops Hamburg. It was intercepted at 5100M over the North Sea 25km W of Schagen by a Night-Fighter captained by Nacht-Jagd “Experten” Ofw Karl-Heinz Scherfling (X/NJG1) and shot down at 0333 for his 19th Abschuss
