Smailes, W.W., Pte., 1915

Menin Gate Memorial

On the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, is the name of 2031 Private William Watson Smailes, serving with the 1st/7th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 26/04/1915.

Morpeth Herald 28/05/1915 carries a brief obituary:

Information has been received by Mr and Mrs Joseph Smails, [sic] of Shilbottle, that their youngest son, Private William Waston [sic] Smails, had been killed in action near Ypres. Soon after war was declared Private Smails enlisted into the 7th Batt. Northumberland Fusiliers (Territorials) at Alnwick, and went to the front with his batttalion on April 20th. Prior to joining the colours he assisted his father, who is a carting contractor at Shilbottle.

William Watson Smailes is remembered at Shilbottle on S18.04 and in A11.59 (Buckley, F., War History of the Seventh Northumberland Fusiliers, Newcastle upon Tyne, T.M. Grierson, Printer, [N.D.]) and as Smails at Shilbottle S18.01 S18.02 S18.03 and S18.10
