Tait, J.J., Pte., 1916

On the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of 3602 Private John James Tait, serving with the 1st/7th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 15/09/1916.

In St. Phillip and St. James churchyard Rock is a family headstone which reads:-

In loving memory of
George Tait who died at Rock
March 29 1898 aged 52 years
Also of Jane his wife
Who died at Hawkhill
July 3 1923 aged 69 years
Also Thomas Tait his father
Who died at Rock South Farm
April 1881 aged 65 years
Also John James son of
The above George Tait
Who died in infancy
Also John James son of the above
George Tait killed in action
In France Sept. 15 1916
Also Phyllis Jane daughter of the
Above George Tait who died at
Rock Moor House August 9 1920
Aged 41 years

The Newcastle Journal 20/11/1916 reports:-

Mrs Tait of Hawkhill, Alnwick has received news that her youngest son Private John James Tait, Northumberland Fusiliers, has been killed in action. He was a prominent member in the rifle and cricket clubs at Rock.

"Jock" Tait was known locally as a good cricketer.

Morpeth Herald 24/11/1916 carries a brief obituary:

Mrs Tait, of Hawkhill, Alnwick, has received news that her youngest son, Private John James Tait, Northumberland Fusiliers, has been killed in action.

John James Tait is remembered at Rock on R20.01 and R20.02 and in the Battalion History
