Sgt. A.D. Trotter of 29 O.T.U. (Operational Training Unit) was killed when Vickers Wellington III BJ967 ‘F’ ditched at sea on its way back from a mission to St Omer. Only the pilot survived, and he reported that the Wellington suffered a fire in the starboard engine, and was forced to ditch off the coast near Newhaven. It broke up and sank immediately after the crash-landing, and the pilot was rescued by a Walrus ASR aircraft. Sgt Trotter’s body was recovered by Royal Navy vessels, and he was buried at sea. He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
