Snowdon, G.C.B., Pte., 1916

On a windowsill inside St. Michael's Church is a grave marker which reads:

Loving memory
of
Pte. G.C.B. Snowdon
6th Bn. Northld. Fus.

Died
of
Wounds
14-4-16

An accompanying letter from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission reads:
"Private George Carr Barker Snowdon, 2238, "A" Company, 1st/6th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, died on 14 April 1916. age 21 He is buried in Plot 2, Row D, Grave 187 in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, France. He was the son of Ann Snowdon of Newcastle-on-Tyne and the late William Frain Snowdon.
Bailleul is a town in the Department of the Nord, on the Belgian Border. The Communal Cemetery is on the eastern outskirts of the town and the extension is on the east side of it."
