Bryant, R.E., Capt., 1917

In Cambrin Churchyard Extension is the Commonwealth War Grave of Captain Reginald Eyre Bryant, serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 20/01/1917.

Bryant, Reginald Eyre, Capt., 14th (Service) Battn. The Durham Light Infantry; 5th son of Edward Ross Bryant, of Eglingham, Alnwick, Coal Exporter, and his wife Eliza, daughter of Henry John King-Church, of Albury, Surrey; born Durham, 8 March 1878; educated Sedbergh School, and San Sebastian; subsequently became a partner in the firm of Messrs. Bryant & Co., enlisted in the 6th Northumberland Fusiliers in November 1914; was gazetted 2nd Lieut. Durham Light Infantry; promoted Lieut., and subsequently Captain in January 1916; acted as Musketry Instructor in Camp at Rugeley, Co. Durham; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from April, 1915; was wounded during the fighting on the Somme in September 1916, and was killed in action near La Bassée 20 January 1917, while inspecting wire at night. Buried in the Church Cemetery at Cambrin. A brother officer wrote: “His life was a model for everyone, always straight and kind, unselfish, and thinking of his men – a gentleman to the core.” Unmarried.
