On Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 265794 Lance SerjeantHerbert Moffitt serving with the 8th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 16/08/1917.

Son of the late Charles and Jane Ann Moffitt; husband of Elizabeth Moffitt, of Broome Park, Alnwick, Northumberland.

In the churchyard is a family headstone which reads:

In Loving Memory
of
Robert John, the beloved son of
Thomas & Elizabeth Thorburn
of Abberwick
who died April 16, 1899
aged 8 years and 5 months.
Also of the above
Elizabeth Thornburn,
who died at Broome Park April 21, 1917
aged 60 years.
Also of Herbert Moffitt,
their son-in-law, who was killed
in action in France, August 16th 1917,
aged 26 years.
Also of the above
Thomas Thorburn
who died at Broome Park July 19 1936
aged 77 years.
Also Elizabeth Moffitt,
dear wife of the above
Herbert, and daughter of
Elizabeth & Thomas Thorburn
died at Warkworth Sept. 17, 1976
in her 88th year.
Gone to be with Jesus which is
far better.
