On the Helles Memorial is the name of KX/348 Able Seaman George Ernest Murray, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 06/05/1915.

In Amble East Cemetery there is a family headstone which reads:

Also of their
dearly
beloved son
Able Seaman
George Ernest
(Ernie) Murray,
Hood Battalion
who was killed in action
at the Dardanelles
May 6 1915
aged 26 years.

Greater love hath no man.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

George was born on 11th September 1888. He was working as a miner living at 1, Edwin Street, Amble when he enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers on 2nd September 1914.

His next of kin was shown as his aunt, Miss Jane Darling living at 40, Marine Road, Amble.

He transferred to the RNVR on 9th September 1914 and joined the Hood Battalion on the same day. George was posted as being killed in action in Gallipoli on 6th May 1915.

On several memorials in Amble is the name “Murray” with the initials “C.E.” Is this a different man or an error? A13.01 and A13.07.

In the Congregational Church there is the name of Ernest Murray. The gravestone shows that he was known as Ernest and not George. A13.11
