Cockburn, J., A/Smn, 1918

In Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt is the Commonwealth War Grave of Tyneside Z/3030 Able Seaman J. Cockburn, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 26/08/1918.

Colin Boyd has submitted the following:

John was born on 12th May 1894 and was working as a miner living with his father, John at 4, Dovecote Street, Amble when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 4th January 1915.

He was posted to the Benbow Battalion until he transferred to the Anson Battalion where he served until 29th May 1917 when he was invalided to the UK with a toe injury. After rejoining the Anson Battalion on 24th September 1917 he was invalided to the UK again suffering from a gun shot wound to the right arm.

John returned to the Anson Battalion on 8th April 1918 and died of wounds in the 56th Casualty Clearing Station on 26th August 1918 suffering from a shrapnel wound to the back.

John Cockburn is remembered in Amble on A13.01 A13.07 and A13.11
