Sgt J O Straffen M.i.D. (Service Nš 995426) of 142 Sqn was killed in Vickers Wellington IV Z1376 QT-M, which was lost without trace on a mission to Hamburg on July 27th 1942. He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

James was well known in Amble as he was captain of Amble Cricket Team and also played for the County. He was mentioned in Despatches in July 1942.
