Scott, W.H., F/Sgt./Nav., 1944

In Durnbach War Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1486629 Flight Sergeant Navigator William Henry Scott, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 13/08/1944.

In Amble West Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of my dear husband
Henry Taylor Scott
who died Nov. 14th 1959, aged 66 years.
Also of our dearly loved son
Flt/Sgt. William Henry Scott, R.A.F.V.R.
aged 20 years & 11 months; missing Aug. 13th 1944
buried in Durnbach Cemetery, Bad Tolz, Germany
Also of Catherine Scott
died 16th Jan. 1984 aged 85 years.

Flight Sgt (Navigator) W.H. Scott of 578 Sqn, was killed in Handley Page Halifax III NA604 LK-T. It crashed near the village of Monchbruch, Germany, due to unknown causes. He is buried in Durnbach War Cemetery.

Formed at Snaith on the 14th January 1944 from 'C' Flight of No 51(B) Squadron and equipped with B Mk III Halifaxes. Moved to Burn on 6th February 1944 and on 30th March Pilot Officer C.J. Barton earned the only 'Halifax' VC of the war. Last operational mission, against Wuppertal 13th March 1945. Disbanded 16th March 1945.
Halifax III NA604. Contract No ACFT/891 requisition HA1/E11/41. Fairey Aviation Co Ltd. Deliveries commenced April 1944 (NA492). B/A/Met, Mk III NA492-531, NA543-587, NA599-644, NA656-704.
On the night of 13/14th August the Opel factories at Russellheim, near Mainz was attacked by 287 Halifaxes and Lancasters, in the face of moderate heavy flak and persistent German night fighters, who appeared in force towards the end of the mission. The price was 20 heavy bombers. A second raid completed the task, but the Halifaxes were busy over France that night. Two other Halifaxes failed to return from the 169 strong force.
