Simon Glancey has submitted the following: The Morpeth Herald of Friday, 10/09/1948 reports the loss of 1077076 Warrant Officer Samuel James Herd, of 38 Squadron, R.A.F.

'ALNMOUTH AIRMAN KILLED
The wife of signaller J. S. Herd, of Lyngarth, Station Road, Alnmouth, was staying with his parents in Belfast on Sunday, when news came to Lyngarth and was received by her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Graham, that her husband was killed when his plane crashed on the side of Monte Cristo Island, in the Mediterranean, on Friday. The aircraft was a R.A.F. Lancaster based on Malta and was exercising with British and American units. The crew of seven were all killed, and buried at sea.'

W/O Herd was killed in the crash of Lancaster GR.3 TZ269 RL-N, which crashed into a 1300 feet cliff face on Montecristo Island in the Tyrrhenian Sea between mainland Italy and Corsica on September 3rd 1948.
