Simpson, T., L/Cpl. awarded M.M. 1916
The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 28/10/1916 reports the presentation of the Military Medal to Lance Corporal Thomas Simpson, age 26, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers. The award was for bravery in the battlefield when he cleared out four or five German dugouts and captured 15 prisoners, six of them wounded. One of the dug-outs was cleaned out and his group remained until the following night when they were relieved.

L/Cpl. Simpson was also given a gold watch and albert subscribed for by the inhabitants of the village.

Before the war, L/Cpl. Simpson worked at Montague Colliery, Scotswood and also lived in the village.
