Shepherd, S., Pte., 1919

In Newburn (Lemington) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 265887 Private Samuel Shepherd serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 16/02/1919.

The headstone reads:

Loving memory of
Samuel Shepherd
who died Feb. 16th 1919,
aged 22 years,
also John William Garnett
of Denton Burn,
who died May 23rd 1933,
aged 60 years.
Elizabeth Jane Garnett,
dear wife of the above,
who died July 8th 1952,
aged 79 years.

Samuel was born at 166 Hotspur Street, Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne in 1896 and at the time of enlisting was living at The Bungalow, Slatyford Lane, East Denton and worked as a plumber. He was the husband of Rhoda Salkeld (formerly Shepherd).

He originally enlisted on 4th June 1915, with the 6th Battalion (6/4091 Private), but re-enlisted on 28th September 1915 with the 4th Reserve Battalion.

He had several spells in field hospitals, one in particular when he received gunshot wounds to the left foot, right arm, leg and thigh. He was eventually discharged due to ‘Thrombosis of the Vein’ received during action at High Wood, Somme, France on 15th November 1916. He was admitted to the Royal Chelsea Hospital in the same month and was awarded the Silver War Badge on 2nd December 1917. He eventually died of Pneumonia.
