Arthur was born at St Andrew’s, Newcastle, the son of Albert Edward and Martha Ellen of 25 Eldon Place, Newcastle.
He enlisted at Newcastle upon Tyne and was formerly attested with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Private, 181) on 9 September 1917. He was transferred to the Cheshires on 4 September 1916.
