William Robertson was born on the 14th November 1884, at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, son of William Robertson, of 170 Pilgrim Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
William was educated at the All Saints School, and was employed as a Rivetter at Armstrong, Whitworth and Company's shipyard.
He married Mary Jane, at Newcastle-upon-Tyne and they had one son called Alexander born on the 8th April 1909.
William Robertson was well known in Sporting Circles, being several times successful in boxing competitions, also competing with success in running events as Joe Coe. In 1913 he won the regimental gold medal for running at Beverley.
He enlisted in the 3rd East Yorkshire Regiment, after serving his time, he joined the reserves. On mobilisation he was called up and sent to France. He was attached to the 1st Battalion and was killed in action by a sniper on the 8th April 1915.
