Menin Gate Memorial

On the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial is the name of 8976 Private John Hedley Patterson, serving with the 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers who died 04/03/1915.

John Hedley Patterson was born in Newcastle on the 7th February, 1884, son of James Patterson, a joiner. He was educated at Ouseburn Board School, and worked in the moulding shop of Messrs, Henry Watson & Sons, High Bridge Works at Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

He married at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Mary Pringle, on the 28th July 1907, and had with three other children a son called John Headley born 24th September 1914.

He was a Reservist and was called on up mobilisation on the 5th August 1914.

Sent to France in November 1914, he was killed in action on the 4th March 1915.
