Walther, H.T., Rfm., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of R/194160 Rifleman Harry Theodore Walther, serving with the King's Royal Rifle Corps who died 17/09/1916.

Harry was born in 1894 in Gateshead.

The 1901 shows the family living at 2 Queen's Terrace, Jesmond. His father William, who was born in Germany, was aged 35 and was manager at a paint works. His mother Anne, also born in Germany, was aged 28. There were four children, all born in Newcastle. These were Henry, aged 6; Kurt, aged 5; Hans, aged 4 and Ulrich, aged 2. There were two servants.

The 1911 Census shows their address as Earlfield House, Granville Road, Newcastle. Father William was aged 43 and still a manager at a paint works. His wife Anne was now 38, and they had been married 17 years. There were five children: Harry, aged 16, born Gateshead; Kurt Albert, aged 15, born Gateshead; Hans William, aged about 14, born Gateshead; Cyril Ulrick Max, aged 12, born in Newcastle; Frederick William, aged 4, born Winlaton. There was a governess who was born in Germany, and three servants.

Harry's father, William Walther, also known as Friedrich Wilhelm Walther, was a works manager at International Paint in Gateshead, and later became a Director.

Harry played cricket at Newcastle Modern School. He also played at Northumberland County Club, but only in Saturday matches, not in County matches.

His brother Kurt Albert Walther also died in 1915.

The Newcastle Daily Journal 17/11/1916 reports:

Killed in action, 15th September 1916, Lance Corporal H.T. Walther, King's Royal Rifles, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Walther, 15 Granville Road, Jesmond.

Probate for Harry Walther, Rifleman of 1 Granville Road, was granted to his father, company director, showed a sum of £559 7s 6d, so Harry never married.
