Ernest Laurence Smith was born 13th August 1889, at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the third son of John Smith, a Tailor, of 160 Wharton Terrace, Heaton, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and his wife Margaret, daughter of Liny Lloyd Daney.
Ernest was educated at the St Mary's Catholic School and Westgate Road Council school. He was employed with the North-Eastern Advertising Company at Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
They were residing at 131, Simonside Terrace, Heaton, Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1911.
He married on the 19th October 1912 at Newcastle, Mary Alice, of 72 Mason Street, Byker, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Smith. They had two daughters, Dorothy Vera born 30th March 1913, and Audrey who was born 29th December 1914.
Ernest joined the Northumberland Volunteers in about 1907, and volunteered for overseas service on the outbreak of war.
He was sent to France in April 1915, and was killed in action in the trenches near Ypres, on the 15th June 1915.
He had also obtained a medal for good work in rifle practice in connection with the Ponteland Company.
