Thompson, R.F., F/Off., 1945
In Byker and Heaton Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 174908 Flying Officer Robert Fraser Thompson, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 18/05/1945.

F/Officer Thompson was serving with 30 O.T.U. He was a crew member of Wellington X NA718 BT-O which took off from Gamston on an air test. Something went wrong and in an attempt to glide back the aircraft crashed three miles from the runway. F/O Thompson had over 1,100 hours flying time. Both men were killed.
