Frederick Henderson May was born in the third quarter of 1907, the son of Joseph William and Elizabeth (nee Watt) and the husband of Ellen (nee Gordon) whom he married in the fourth quarter of 1937 at Newcastle upon Tyne. He served as a fitter with 224 Squadron, which was a Coastal Command squadron set up in February 1937 with personnel from 48 Squadron and was based at R.A.F. Leuchars, Scotland until 1941.
