James was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, the son of William and Elizabeth. He enlisted at Newcastle with the 2nd Battalion and was accidently killed. He is listed on the Army Roll of Honour, 1939-1945.
His obituary appeared in the local Evening Chronicle 07/08/1940 and read:
Johnson – Colliery Cottage, Glue House Lane, on 3rd by accident, aged 20 years. Private James Johnson (Northumberland Fusiliers), beloved son of William and Nancy Johnson. Interment Elswick Cemetery, Thursday, leaving from residence 2.30. All friends kindly invited."
