In St.John's Westgate and Elswick Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of M/2/119542 Private John Thomas Dove, serving with the Royal Army Service Corps who died 05/12/1918.

The headstone reads:

In memory of
Mary Alderson
dearly beloved daughter of
John Thomas & Mary Dove
who died December 1st 1908
aged 29 years.
Also the above
John Thomas Dove
who died ?Dec. 5th 1917
aged 75 years.
Also John Thomas Dove
son of the above
who died Dec. 5th 1918,
of wounds received in action in France.
And of Mary Dovewife of the aboveJohn Thomas Dove
who died March 14th 1931
aged 86 years.

Mechanical Transport Clearing Office (Blackheath)

He was the son of the late Mr. John Thomas and Mary Dove of 10 Esplanade, Whitley Bay, Northumberland. A Secretary, he was Initiated into 541 De Loraine Lodge, Westgate Road, Newcastle on Tyne on the 19th March 1915; Passed 16th April 1915 and Raised on the 25th August 1915 into Holmes Lodge No 2571, Newcastle, Province of Northumberland.

He died of influenza/pneumonia on the 5th December 1918 at the 1st Northern General Hospital, Newcastle on Tyne. He is buried in Newcastle upon Tyne (St. John’s Westgate and Elswick) Cemetery, Grave Reference O.C.131.

His father, a Manufacturer residing in Newcastle, was Initiated on the 21st November 1879 aged 37; Passed 20th February 1880 and Raised on the 19th March 1880 (query De Loraine Lodge no 541 Newcastle. GL Records state ‘Died at sea 5th June 1917’. (Tynemouth 10b 373) aged 74.

John Thomas Dove is remembered at Whitley Bay on W84.31 and in Jesmond on J1.54
