Chapman, A., Pte., 1918
On the Pozieres memorial is the name of 19/1201 Private Ambrose Chapman serving with the 19th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 25/03/1918.

Susan Carmichael has provided the following:

Ambrose was the son of Patrick and Catherine Chapman, from Ireland. He was born in the fourth quarter of 1885 in Wallsend, Tynemouth, Northumberland.

In 1891 the family had eight children and was living in Swan Street, Wallsend, where the father was a Ship Yard Labourer.

By 1901 Ambrose had moved to 51, Byker Hill, Byker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, with his parents, 6 brothers and 2 sisters. He had also started work as a Rivet Heater in the Ship Yard.

The 1911 census shows Ambrose lived at 15, Harvey Street, Byker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne with his parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.. He was now working as a House Painter.

After he was killed his beneficiary was listed as his sister Bridget.

Ambrose Chapman is remembered in the Battalion History page 180.
