Sgt. May was killed when Handley-Page Halifax II W1044 ZA-D of 10 Squadron was lost on a mission to attack the German battleship Tirpitz. The Halifax crashed close to the Tirpitz, with the loss of all seven crew members. The bodies of three of them including Sgt. May, were recovered from the water some days later.
He is remembered in Benwell on B86.03
