Flight Sgt. Lowdon was killed when the Royal Navy aircraft carrier H.M.S. Glorious was sunk by the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in the Norwegian Sea. F/Sgt Lowdon was one of the R.A.F. ground crew attached to No. 802 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm. H.M.S. Glorious had taken aboard some 20 R.A.F. Hurricane and Gladiator aircraft after the evacuation of Norway.
He is remembered in Benwell on B86.03
