Illustrated Chronicle July 1917 reports:

“3rd N.F. Corporal’s funeral at Benwell.
The remains of Corporal John Savage, of the 3rd Batt. , Northumberland Fusiliers, were interred yesterday at Benwell Churchyard, with full military honours. Savage belonged to Wallsend, and was a special reserve man. He joined the colours last August, and was about to proceed to the Front when he was seized with illness, and died at Armstrong College Hospital. Corporal Savage was a smart soldier, and was highly esteemed by his officers and comrades, who showed their respect by attending his funeral in large numbers. He was 28 years of age, and had only been married a few months.”
