Maughan, W., Pte., 1915

On the Helles Memorial is the name of 5771 Private William Maughan, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 18/08/1915.

In Benwell (St.James) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
James
The dearly beloved husband of
Elizabeth Maughan
Who died May 17th 1916 aged 54 years.
Also their only son William
Who was killed in the Dardanelles
August 18th 1915 aged 28 years.
Also Elizabeth wife of the above James Maughan
Died March 29th 1935 aged 75 years.
Rest in Peace.

The Geordie at War Project states:

“8th Northumberland Fusiliers were involved in an attack on the W Hills during the Gallipoli campaign. During the action on 18/19 August 1915 the battalion sustained over 350 casualties including all the officers."

A photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle 23/09/1915.
