178782 Private
F. Gray
Machine Gun Corps (Inf.)
24th June 1920 age 22

Still to memory dear.

The Geordie at War Project states:

"Pte. Gray joined the 12 (S) Battalion, the Durham light Infantry, being allocated the Army number 104966. He served in Italy with the DLI. His Attestation Form indicates he was an Electrical Labourer which may have been a Reserved Occupation, hence he was not called up until June 1918. He stayed in the Army after the war and transferred to the Machine Gun Corps on 30 April 1919. He served at Belton Park, Grantham – the Headquarters of the MGC until 1920 when he was posted to Shorncliffe Military Hospital.

Private Gray was not an exemplary soldier as his Conduct Sheet shows. He was charged with “Eating a portion of his iron ration” on 20 November 1918 for which he received 7 days Field Punishment No.2."
