The Geordie at War Project states:

“Fusilier Dykes joined up on 18 October 1939 just after the start of World War Two. The letter M after the date in the left hand column stands for Militia indicating he was in the Territorial Army. He was discharged on 4 August 1940 under Paragraph 383 (xvi) of King’s Regulations 1935. This indicates he was invalided as unfit for service in the Army.
