Sgt. Thorley was killed when Avro Lancaster I ME617 SR-N of 101 Squadron was lost on a mission to Russelheim. The Lancaster was on A.B.C. (Air Borne Cigar) electronic jamming duties. A.B.C. consisted of three 50 watt transmitters used to jam the radio frequencies used by German night fighter controllers.
Of the eight crew members, only the rear gunner survived to become a P.o.W.
