Thornton, J. D., L.A.C., 1943
On the Malta Memorial is the name of 1229867 Leading Aircraftman John Dinsdale Thornton, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 24/12/1943.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

L.A.C. Thornton was killed when the seaplane tender S.S. Dumana was torpedoed by U-515, some 70 miles W.S.W. of Sassandra, Ivory Coast. The ship had been part of a convoy, but had lost contact with the convoy. It sank in seven minutes, with the loss of 30 crew members, two gunners and seven R.A.F. personnel.

He is remembered in Benwell on B86.03
