McCormack, J., Sgt., 1942
In Charleroi Communal Cemetery, Belgium, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 645923 Sergeant James McCormack, serving with the Royal Air Force, who died 31/05/1942.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

Sgt. McCormack was killed when Vickers Wellington R1791 of 15 O.T.U. (Operational Training Unit) was lost on a mission to Cologne. Of the five crew, three were killed, one became a P.o.W., and the fifth evaded capture. The Wellington was one of several O.T.U. bombers used to make up the numbers for a 1,000 bomber raid.

Wellington R1791 SM-R had departed Harwell at 2314 for Ops Cologne
It was intercepted at 2000M above Montigny-le-Tilleaul, 5km W of Charleroi by a Night-Fighter captained by Lt Helmut Niklas (VI/NJG1) and shot down at 0246 for his 1st Abschuss
