Cumberland and Westmorland Herald 27/05/1918 reports him as being a prisoner of war.

He had been awarded the Military Cross.
His mother was Patience S. Osborne nee Bowman. Her story is as follows:
In 1871 census Patience, aged 7, was living with her parents Joseph and Ann Bowman at Ainstable.
In 1881 Patience, now aged 18, was a housemaid at Carlisle Abbey.
In 1891 Patience, aged 27, and George Bowman, aged 2, were living with Patience’s parents Joseph & Ann Bowman at Vicarage Farm, Ainstable.
In 1899 Patience Sarah Bowman married George Morris Osborne.
In 1901 Census states that they were living at 24 Derwent Road, Newburn, Tyneside, with her father George Morris Bowman, now aged 60, born in Wales. Her son, George B. Osborne, now aged 12, was a painter, born Ainstable. She has another son, Hugh M. aged 1 year.
In 1911 they are still at the same address in Newburn. Patience Sarah had been married 12 years and had two children, of whom one died. Her son, George Bowman, now aged 22, was a joiner. There is no trace of a husband, and George Bowman is not called George Osborne.
Jeremy Godwin of the Cumbria Family History Society provided the following about George Osborne’s grandparents:
Patience’s father Joseph died in 1896 aged 76; Patience’s mother Ann died in 1896 aged 70. Both are buried in Ainstable Churchyard.
George Osborne is remembered at Newburn on N13.01 and N13.02 and on the lychgate at St.Michael’s Church, Ainstable
