WALLSEND

Bell, H., Bdr., taken to court 1916
The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 19/01/1916 reports:

“Yesterday, At Wallsend, Henry Bell, Bombardier, R.G.A. was charged with larceny as bailee of a pair of military boots. The evidence showed that the defendant went into pawnshop and offered the boots in pledge. While he was so engaged Detective Sweeney entered the premises and seeing that the boots belonged to the military, he questioned defendant. Bell then admitted that he was a soldier engaged on munitions work. He said he had been for a holiday, and was short of money. Defendant expressed his sorrow, and said it was his intention to redeem the boots. The magistrates decided not to record a conviction against him, and he was discharged on paying costs.”
