On the Runnymede Memorial is the name of 1677697 Sergeant Henry James Bird, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 21/10/1943.

Lancaster JA701 OL-E had departed Wyton at 1747 for Ops Leipzig.

There are two claims for this loss:

It was either intercepted at 6200M, 15-20km SE of Vleiland by a Night-Fighter captained by Lt Heinz Rollard (XII/NJG1) and shot down at 2250 for his 2nd Abschuss,

Or
It was intercepted at 7000M over the Sea, 15km N of Vleiland by a Night-Fighter captained by Nacht Jagd “Experten” Ofw Karl-Heinz Scherfling (XII/NJG1) and shot down at 2252 for his 22nd Abschuss.
