Taylor, C., Cpl., 1914-18 (1967)
Mentioned in the Book of Remembrance 1914-18 in St Peter’s Church, Wallsend is 1078137 Corporal Christopher Taylor who served with the Canadian Railway Troops.

Christopher, born on Christmas Eve 1887, was the first child of Canadian born William John and Ann (nee Harrison) Taylor to be born in Wallsend, his older siblings, Edward, Mary, Florence and Lily had all been born in their mother’s home town of Leeds. All his younger siblings, Joseph, Frederick, Francis and Maud were born in Wallsend. Father William worked at the shipyards and in 1891 the family was living in Sixth Street, but by the turn of the century had moved to Holly Avenue, where when he became old enough Christopher also worked at the shipyards as a plater.

In July 1913 Christopher and his mother, Ann, sailed to the United States, arriving in Boston, Massachusetts with the intention of making for Manchester, New Hampshire where her brother Andrew was living and where Christopher was to find work as a steam fitter.

On 2nd May 1916 Christopher crossed the border in Canada and enlisted with the 5th Pioneer Battalion in Montreal, and six months later sailed with them on the SS Metagama to Liverpool and a posting to Bramshott Camp, Hampshire, where on arrival he was appointed Lance Corporal. At the turn of the year with the imminent disbandment of the Pioneer Battalions, Christopher Taylor was posted to the 4th Canadian Railway Troops, appointed Corporal, and proceeded with the Battalion from Folkestone to Boulogne, France where he served until the end of the war.

Corporal Taylor returned to England in January 1919, and on to Canada in mid March, where he was demobilised in Montreal on 20th, returning to the USA later that same week. On 26th November 1923 Christopher married Irish girl Mary Ahern in Manchester, New Hampshire and the couple settled on Green Street, where Christopher worked as a steam fitter at a woollen mill. By the 1940s Christopher Taylor was a citizen of the United States, and he died in Manchester, New Hampshire in 1967.
