Moody, J., Pte., 1918
In Bucquoy Road Cemetery, Ficheux, France is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1030677 Private James Moody serving with the 24th Battalion Canadian Infantry who died 15/10/1918.

Jean Longstaff has submitted the following:-

The son of William and Louisa Moody, who at some time had lived in West Hartlepool, James on his attestation papers for the Canadian Expeditionary Force gave his date of birth as 26th February 1899 somewhere in Yorkshire, and his occupation as that of sailor.

He enlisted in the Canadian Army on 25th April 1917 in Fredericton, New Brunswick, becoming Private 1030677 in the 236th (New Brunswick Kilties) Battalion. In October of the same year he was diagnosed with diphtheria and admitted to Alexandria General Hospital in Montreal. Whilst he was in hospital his battalion was posted to England so when he was fit he sailed with the 6th Reinforcement Draft, 1st Depot Battalion, 1st Quebec Regiment in March 1918 from Nova Scotia to Glasgow and was posted to camp at Bramshott, Hampshire as part of the 23rd Reserve Battalion.

Classified as fully fit by a Medical Board he was posted to 42nd Battalion and proceeded with them to France at the end of August. On arrival he was transferred t the 24th (Victoria Rifles) Battalion as part of the 5th Infantry Brigade, 2nd Canadian Division and joined them on 7th September at Croisilles.

In France for only two months, on 12th October 1918 whilst carrying a message during operations near Iwuy, Private Moody was wounded in the abdomen, arm and leg by enemy machine gun fire. He was taken to No.30 Casualty Clearing Station where he died from his wounds three days later.

James Moody is remembered in the Hartlepools on H115.30, W111.86 page 26 and in the Northern Daily Mail List of Casualties
