In South Shields (Harton) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of:-

Durham Light Infantry

William Kirby has submitted the following:-

Richard Young was born in 1895 the son of William and Mary J. Wood. In 1901 the family were living at Brandon and Byshottles. William was a Coal Miner Hewer, son George (13 a Colliery Mason) whilst the youngest sons Robert 11 and Richard were at school.

In 1911 at Langley Moor, Robert at 21 was an Electric Pump man, Richard at 13 was a Blacksmith Striker, William Denis was at school.

Richard enlisted 21st September 1914 and joined the Durham Light Infantry. He embarked for France 11th September 1915. He was wounded and eventually discharged 18th April 1918.

Richard had married Edith Dickinson of Westoe at South Shields in 1917.

Having been awarded his Silver War Badge, Richard died 4th December 1918.

Recipient of the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Richard Young Wood has yet to be identified on a local War Memorial.

He is not remembered in the D.L.I. Book of Remembrance.
