Volunteer Ronald Nisbet Home Guard

In South Shields (Harton) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of Ronald Nisbet, serving with the Home Guard, who died 10/08/1940.

Volunteer Ronald Nisbet, son of James and Ida Nisbet, of South Shields, was in the 23rd Durham (Washington) Battalion Home Guard. He was employed as a lad number-taker at South Shields, died as a result of injuries received whilst on duty with the [LNER] Company's Home Guard unit at South Shields Goods Yard.

Ronald, who was 19 and a half years of age, started with the Company at Dunston in December 1939, and was transferred to South Shields in January 1940.

Ronald Nisbet was buried with full military honours, the Home Guard company commander and many of his fellow Home Guards and railway colleagues being present at the ceremony.
