On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 24/1589 Private William Daglish serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Irish) 24th Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

William Daglish was born about 1897 at Castletown, County Durham to parents John Daglish from Usworth, County Durham and Hannah Daglish from Ryhope in the same county.

In 1901 the Daglish family lived at Carlton Place, Heworth, County Durham where his father was a hewer in the coal mines. William was four years old and was living with the following siblings: Thomas 6, Jane 2 and Isabella aged one month.

The 1911 Census shows William to be 14 years old and his family living at 31, Markham Street, Grangetown, Sunderland where he is working on the screens at a coal mine on the surface. Additional siblings in the house are Norman 7 and John aged 5.

Military records show William was in D Company and enlisted at Jarrow-on-Tyne.

His Pension Index Card shows only his mother Hannah Daglish and father John Daglish indicating William was not married.
