Holmes, W., Pte., 1915
On the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial is the name of 7873 Private William Holmes serving with the 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 16/06/1915.

William Holmes as born 26th October 1891, at Hebburn Colliery, the son of Thomas Holmes of South Street, Jarrow-on-Tyne, and his wife Jane, daughter of Joseph and Barbara Burnett.

William was educated at St Oswald's School at Hebburn. He married at Jarrow, Wilhelmina (54 Pearson's Place), back Jarrow, on the 12th March, daughter of Jonathan Craik, and had three children. Jonathan, born 15th February 1911, William, born 30th December 1912 and Margaret, born 30th October 1914.

William enlisted 10th November 1910, and served with the British Expeditionary Force from the 28th November 1914 to the 16th June 1915.

He was killed at Hooge, prior to this he was reported missing.
