Peter Hoy has submitted the following (his ref: 5827):

Private Charles Alfred N. Butcher, Royal Army Medical Corps, age unknown.

Son of Alfred Butcher a hand-driller and hole-cutter (shipyard) – born in Wenhaston, Suffolk, and a 68-year old widower in 1911. He had had twelve children, eight still living in 1911.

Husband of Mary E. nee Beattie of 15 Napier Street, Jarrow They were married on 21 October 1914. Their marriage was registered in South Shields during the December quarter of 1914.

Siblings (1911 ages): Elizabeth (34; born in West Hartlepool; a housekeeper; single), William (23; born in Jarrow; a painter) and John (17; born in Jarrow – South Shields, December quarter 1889).

Children: Kenneth C. and Mary L. (Both South Shields – March quarter 1920) and Leslie B. (South Shields – December quarter 1924).

Nephew: Bartholomew Lynn.

He was employed as a boat-builder and shipwright in 1911.

He is remembered at Jarrow on J2.22 and J2.42
